This is a project where traditional craftsmanship meets modern technology. This sailing cargo ship will be using the wind to go everywhere it needs to go. There will be a high tech fully electric propulsion system on board. During sailing by the wind, the batteries are being charged by specially designed controlable pitch propellers that are driven by the speed of the boat. The generated power stored in the batteries will be used when there is no (favourable) wind and for manoeuvring in harbours.
De Villiers & Van Schaik Marine Design collaborate with Sigma Plus Associates in Switzerland to develop the electic regenerative system based on our experiences with Schooner Opal from North Sailing in Iceland.
The mission of SAILCARGO INC: "We will build and operate a cargo sailing vessel by synthesizing old-world ship building techniques with avant-garde energy and propulsion systems design. Our vision is to create a prosperous regenerative model that meets the ecological, ethical, and economic requirements of our rapidly changing world. Our objective as Costa Rica's Flagship is to demonstrate that a carbon neutral shipping company can not only be financially competitive, but can inspire change and educate."
Currently a crowdfunding campaign is going on the get the project into the next phase. You can be part of this project and even become a shareholder of the ship.
